Student Assistance Program (SAP)

What is SAP?
The Student Assistance Program (SAP), a program required in every school in Pennsylvania, is designed to assist school personnel to identify issues, including alcohol, drugs and others, which pose a barrier to a student’s learning and school success.

When should a student be referred to the SAP Team?
Please contact the School Counseling Office if your child exhibits any of the following:

Withdrawal from family, friends, school

Changing friends; no longer spends time with old friends

Unexplained physical injuries

Talking about suicide
-
Depressed
-
Defying authority
-
Acting aggressively
-
Lying
-
Sudden drop in grades
-
Experimenting with drugs or alcohol

Disclosure of home/family issues

Continual attendance issues
-
Difficulty relating to other students
What is the SAP Process?

Teacher/Team/Parent referral to the SAP Team
-
SAP Team discusses referral
-
Teacher Checklists are sent to current teachers
-
SAP Team reviews checklists/folder for patterns and decides what steps may be warranted
-
Student’s school counselor contacts parent/guardian to discuss concerns for the student; permission forms sent to parent/guardian

SAP Team and parents work together to support the student
Services offered through SAP:

Case manager checks in with student once per week
-
Student meets with in-school mental health intervention specialist
-
Student meets with in-school drug & alcohol education specialist
-
Referral to Regional Counseling Center, school-based mental health program
-
Referral to other community support services
